dia: beacon

On Sunday, instead of having a class final, our Fashion History: Couture class took a field trip to the city of Beacon to visit the art museum Dia. I have only heard incredible things about the place so I was extremely excited, although stressed about finals, to go visit. Dia houses some of the most influencial artists of the 1960s and 1970s in a historic 300,000 square foot printing factory. Not only is this location amazing but the artwork is beyond incredible. Below is a photo of sculptor Richard Serra's installation "A Matter of Time." The pieces weigh approximately 1,200 tons and are over 400 feet in length. Panels are only held together by their weight and shape. After seeing something as magnificient as this, I stopped giving a damn about exams.

60s mood board

One of my most favorite assignments this semester was to create a mood board using 6-7 references, including artists, musicians, architects, and designers from the 1960s. Surprisingly, this theme was originally unintentional. I simply began moving in this direction as a result of the work I selected. As you can see, I was highly influenced by Andy Warhol, Rudi Gernreich, Robert Rauschenberg, The Rolling Stones, Picasso, and Walter Gropius. To add a bit of "pop" (pun intended) to the board, I made the Gernreich model and Andy Warhol's gun as pop-ups.

skinny jeans

So, long time no post. This past month we have been creating physical moods boards and sketching garments so I have had nothing to show you. However, this week we were assigned to create another film using still photos on a current fashion trend. We were asked to trace its history from the absolute beginning until now. I chose to do my assignment on skinny jeans because I absolutely love them. Did you know that this trend began in the 1790s? CRAZYYY.

the bouncing souls color story

This week, I was asked to create a simple color palette based on a photograph, of basically anything, with which I have had some sort of personal encounter or experience. My obvious thought was an old photograph of myself, a random gentleman, and Greg Attonito (the lead singer of the Bouncing Souls) at the Bouncing Souls show in Halifax, Nova Scotia. That evening, as I was singing my heart out, Greg came to the front of the stage, grabbed my camera, leaned into the crowd, and took a picture of us together. I was so estatic that I couldn't wipe the smile off my face for the entire show. Therefore, I thought that it was only appropriate to pay a tribute to punk rock and its influence on fashion through this little momento from my past.
